Arteta breathe sigh of ‘relief’ after Arsenal squeeze through Wolves with two own goals

An own goal in the 94th minute from Yerson Mosquera helped Arsenal clinch a dramatic 2-1 victory over bottom club, Wolverhampton Wanderers, in the Premier League 2025/26 clash at Emirates Stadium on Saturday 13 December, 2025.

Head Coach of Arsenal, Mikel Arteta , described the outcome as a “relief” after his side were only able to cart all three (3) points with two (2) own goals.

The result sends the Gunners five (5) points clear at the top of the Premier League table; second-placed Manchester City will field against Crystal Palace on Sunday 14 December, 2025 at Selhurst Park at 15:00 (WAT).

If Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens emerge victorious over the Eagles then the gap with Arsenal will shorten.

It looked like Wolves had snatched a point from the showdown when Nigerian striker, Tolu Arokodare’s 90th-minute header struck out Sam Johnstone’s earlier own goal to shock the Emirates Stadium.

However, Arsenal fought back as a cross from Bukayo Saka was headed by Mosquera into his own net following pressure from substitute Gabriel Jesus to ignite heavy celebrations.

According to arsenal.com, in his post-victory, Arteta said:

On the mood after the game…

“It was a relief, but a very clear understanding that the margin should have been bigger. After not being precise enough in the first half with the amount of situations that we generated inside the opposition box and we didn’t pick the right colour of shirt on so many occasions, we had an overload to do that.

“We had to improve in the second half in relation to that, I think we did it.”

On the grit and determination…

“That’s something very positive, but I don’t put it down sometimes to, yeah, resilience and goal. No, it’s what happened before. We should have stopped the source before and that’s on us. You have to give credit to Wolves and what they’ve done.”

On what Arsenal learnt from the game…

“Learn from it and then move on, and every time you win in the Premier League, you should be happy. You should be conscious of the difficulty of it, but we made it even harder for ourselves today and that’s the big lesson that we have to do.”

On Ben White’s injury…

“It looks like a hamstring [injury], so we don’t know the extent of that, but probably tomorrow or the day after we’ll know more.”

For his contribution to Arsenal’s slim victory, Bukayo Saka, who “leads by example”, was voted Player Of The Match.

A draw against Wolves, a side who are yet to win a game in the Premier League this season, would have gifted Manchester City the opportunity to go top with victory over Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon, but, the late win piles the pressure on Arsenal’s rivals.

Thanks to Wolves’ resilience, the home side recorded no shot on target in the first 45 minutes with a scare at the other end after goalkeeper, David Raya, was forced to make a save from a one-to-one effort from Hwang Hee-Chan.

Result:
