Teachers deserve ‘special salary and career progression structure’ – ADC Spox Bolaji

Bolaji Abdullahi, Spox of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called for a “special salary and career progressiom structure” for teachers.

Abdullahi made the call as he commemorates International Teachers’ Day 2025 on Sunday 5 October, 2025.

According to unesco.org:

World Teachers’ Day is held annually on 5 October to celebrate all teachers around the globe. It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets benchmarks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers,

and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions.

Abdullahi said, teachers remain the “most important factor in the education system”, adding, every reform which targets the improvement of learning outcomes “must put the teachers first”.

Abdullahi posted on X: “As we commemorate #InternationalTeachersDay, I reiterate that the teacher is the most important factor in the education system.

“All reforms aimed at improving learning outcomes, especially in the early years, must put the teacher first and create conditions that keep the best teachers in the classroom and attract the best talents into teaching.

“A special salary and career progression structure for teachers is the way to go, so that teachers can feel special and truly respected.

“Happy #TeachersDay2025 to all our teachers!”
