Hansi Flick’s Barcelona missed the opportunity to return to the summit of the La Liga 2025/26 after conceding a humiliating 4-1 loss to Sevilla on Sunday 5 October, 2025 at Estadio R. Sanchez Pizjuan.
The Catalans needed to win the showdown to take back leadership from Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid, who defeated Villarreal 3-1 on Saturday.
Former Barcelona winger, Alexis Sanchez, opened scoring for Sevilla in the 13th minute from the penalty spot, and Isaac Romero made it two in the 36th minute.
England forward, Marcus Rashford, reduced the deficit for the visitors in the 7th minute of first half additional time, but, Polish striker, Robert Lewandowski, who had the chance to bring parity to the clash from the penalty spot, missed the kick in the 76th minute.
Flick, former Bayern Munich head coach, watched as his side displayed a below-expectation performance for a long period and deservedly suffered their first top flight defeat of the season against a Sevilla, who had not emerged victorious against the Catalans in the Spanish La Liga in years.
Jose Angel Carmona and Akor Adams scored Sevilla’s third and fourth in the 90th and 6th minute of additional time respectively to hand the hosts maximum points.
After eight (8) games, Barcelona are two (2) points trailing toppers, Real Madrid, who have amassed 21 points, while, Sevilla are 6th with thirteen (13) points.
