Emiliano Buendia lost a second-half penalty as English side, Aston Villa, fell to a shock 2-1 Uefa Europa League 2025/26 defeat against Dutch side, Go Ahead Eagles, in Deventer on Thursday 23 October, 2025.
Evann Guessand’s early goal had appeared like being the precursor to Unai Emery’s Villans maintaining their 100% record in the competition.
However, the home side drew level from Mathis Suray’s deflected shot just before the interval and went in front when Mats Deijl stole in just after the hour mark to lift the ball over Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Buendia lost a golden chance to equalize for the visitors from the panelty spot in the closing stages after home defender Dean James had been penalised for handball the tight De Adelaarshorst stadium ignited with joy.
The penalty loss made sure the Eredivisie side carted maximum points, after securing their ticket for the competition by winning the Dutch Cup last term for their first major honour in 92 years.
