India has termed US President, Donald Trump’s threat of “substantially” higher tariffs over its purchase of oil from Russia “unjustified and unreasonable”.
In a post via Truth Social, the US president cautioned he would raise levies, saying India “don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine”.
Currently, India is among the biggest buyers of Russian oil. It has emerge an important export market for Moscow after several European countries cut trade after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The US President did not specify what the new tariff would be, however, it comes just days after he launched a hefty 25% levy on the Asian country.
Via a statement, Randhir Jaiswal, Spox for India’s foreign ministry, said, the United States (US) had encouraged India to import Russian gas at the start of the conflict, “for strengthening global energy markets stability”.
