Governor Oborevwori orders release of ₦10bn for pensions owed Delta State retirees

Sheriff Oborevwori, Executive Governor of Delta State, has orderd the release of ₦10 billion to the bureau of state pension for the payment of pensions owed to the State’s respected retirees with immediate effect.

Oborevwori announced, his government, so far, has paid a total of ₦36.4 billion in pensions for civil servants and retirees.

The Governor made this known at a meeting with the Pension Board, led by the Chairman, Bureau of State Pensions, Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, on Tuesday 19 August, 2025 where the welfare of the South-South State’s retirees were discussed.

He disclosed, a team as been formed to ensure “transparency and accountability” in the implementation of the ₦10 billion pension payment.

Governor Oborevwori made known via X: “This morning, I convened a meeting with the Pension Board, led by the Chairman, Bureau of State Pensions, Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, alongside the State Chairman of the Association of Contributory Retirees, Comrade Anthony Ozu Osanekwu.

“The purpose of this engagement was to deliberate on the welfare of our retirees and to address the challenges faced by them, ranging from backlogs of payments and migration to the contributory scheme.

“So far, my administration has paid a total of ₦36.4 billion, which comes to about 1.4 Billion every month in pensions for civil servants and retirees. The state never defaulted in paying the monthly pensions since the beginning of my administration, However, we must also confront the backlog of arrears, which predates my emergence as Governor.

“To this end, I have ordered a release of ₦10 billion to the bureau of state pension to clear the backlog of pensions owed to our respected retirees with immediate effect.

“In addition to this, I have constituted a team to play oversight on the implementation of this payment to ensure transparency and accountability.

“Our retirees are men and women who gave their best years in service to the state. It is only just that they receive what is duly owed to them, and under my watch, their welfare will remain top priority.”
