‘Every minute, 15 tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans’ – Macron

Emmanuel Macron, President of France, has called for action against global plastic pollution, urging States converged in Geneva, Switzerland to embrace an agreement that “truly meets the scale of this environmental and public health emergency”.

No agreement has been reached as the United Nations (UN) plastic pollution treaty discussions enter final day.

Talks to reach a global treaty to fight plastic pollution were uncertain as negotiations entered their final day after dozens of countries disagreed with the latest draft text.

President Macron posted on X: “Every year, 430 million tonnes of plastic are produced, polluting our environment.

“Every minute, 15 tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans.

“Every day, our health is increasingly at risk.

“What are we waiting for to take action?”

With time elapsing to reach a deal among the 184 countries gathered at the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, the Chair of discussions, Luis Vayas Valdivieso, produced a draft text based on the few areas of convergence, in an attempt to find common ground.

President Macron continued: “This global plastic pollution treaty is our chance to turn the tide. But the weak ambition in the draft presented yesterday at the United Nations is simply unacceptable.

“I urge all states gathered in Geneva to adopt an agreement that truly meets the scale of this environmental and public health emergency.

“For our health. For our environment. For our children.”

Around 100 countries are fighting to limit production as well as tackle cleanup and recycling.

A lot of them are of the opinion it’s crucial to address toxic chemicals. Oil-producing countries only want to eradicate plastic waste.
