The United Kingdom (UK) is “facing housing crisis”, Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, said.
The UK PM described the situation as “ridiculous”, saying, the country has land, however, it is sitting “empty and disused”.
Starmer said, he would “get Britain building”, adding, his government has started unlocking brownfield railway sites across the county “to build 40,000 new homes”.
According to an article published in March, by digitahousing.co.uk:
Skyrocketing rents, unaffordable house prices, and a severe shortage of homes have pushed the UK into a full-blown housing crisis
As a result of these factors, the government estimates that 300,000 new homes are needed annually to meet current demand.
However, UK housebuilding has regularly fallen short of this. For instance, in 2012/13, around 125,000 new homes were supplied, which increased to a peak of 243,000 in 2019/20.
PM Starmer posted on X: “We’re facing a housing crisis — it’s ridiculous to let land we could build on sit empty and disused.
“I said I would get Britain building. I am.
“We’re unlocking brownfield railway sites across Britain to build 40,000 new homes.
“Giving more families the security they deserve.”
