Nigeria’s former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, is in Banjul, The Gambia, for the Inaugural Sahel Governance Forum.

The Forum which kicked off on Wednesday 30 July, 2025 will conclude on Thursday 31 July, 2025.

Jonathan, alongside other political leaders, policymakers, civil society representatives and development partners from across Africa and the world, converged in Banjul to deliberate and find ways to strengthen “citizen trust”, as well as, “deepen political transitions” in the Sahel.

The former Nigeria Leader said on X: “Ahead of Wednesday’s opening of the Inaugural Sahel Governance Forum, billed to hold on July 30-31 2025 in The Gambia, we arrived in Banjul this evening to join many other political leaders, policymakers, civil society representatives and development partners from across Africa and the world, who have gathered for this historic event.

“The two-day conference with the theme “The Future of Governance: (Re)building Social Cohesion and Public Trust”, is convened by the Government of the Republic of The Gambia, in collaboration with the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation (GJF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

“I wish the participants fruitful deliberations as they explore ways of strengthening citizen trust, deepening political transitions and improving governance in the Sahel.”
