The European Commission has confirmed that, there is the possibility of member nations to ban social networks for children.
President of France, Emmanuel Macron, described this latest development as a “victory” for States under the Commission.
The French President said, the Commission has been working towards achieving this for years, and assured “France will be ready”.
President Macron posted on X: “The European Commission has just confirmed the possibility for Member States to ban social networks for those under a certain age. This is a victory for the protection of our children.
“We have been working on this for years. I made a commitment to it: France will be ready!”
The EU executive has suffered serious pressure in recent months to roll out measures to ensure the protection of minors online. National governments in France, Denmark, Spain and elsewhere have called for social media limitations, with some criticizing the EU for not acting speedily enough.
France alongside the Netherlands have made known their supports for an outright ban of social media for minors under 15. Greece has said it believes parental consent should be required for children under a certain age. Denmark, which currently helms work in the Council of the EU, is calling for tougher EU-level actions.
