Super Eagles remember Stephen Keshi who led Nigeria with ‘passion and pride’

Super Eagles remembered former player and coach, Stephen Keshi, nine (9) years after his passing, on Sunday 8 June, 2025.

Keshi, nicknamed ‘The Big Boss’, as both a captain and manager led the Super Eagles with “passion, pride, and an unshakable belief in Nigerian talent”.

Keshi, who fielded for Nigeria as a defender, passed on 7 June, 2016.

As Nigeria’s head coach, Keshi guided the Super Eagles to its third Africa Cup of Nations title in 2013.

Following the AFCON 2013 triumph, the Bauchi State-born, emerged the “only the second person in history to win the tournament as both player and coach.”

Stephen Keshi will remain “forever a Super Eagle.”

Super Eagles wrote on X: “We remember The Big Boss, As both a captain and coach, Keshi led the Super Eagles with passion, pride, and an unshakable belief in Nigerian talent.

“He guided Nigeria to its third Africa Cup of Nations title in 2013, becoming only the second person in history to win the tournament as both player and coach.

“His leadership inspired generations, and his vision helped elevate Nigerian football on the global stage.Forever in our hearts, forever a Super Eagle.

“Rest in power, “Big Boss.””

As a player with the Super Eagles, Keshi won the AFCON in 1994.

With Belgian side, Anderlecht, Keshi won two (2) Belgian First Division titles (1986/87, 1990/91); two (2) Belgian Cup (1988/89, 1989/90); Belgian SuperCup (1987), among other honours.
