Governor of Minnesota State, Tim Walz, has activated the State Emergency Operation Centre following the shooting in the State.
A lawmaker of Minnesota State alongside her husband were shot and killed in their home early in the morning of Saturday.
Govenor Walz said Emerita Melissa Hortman, House Speaker, a Democrat, and her husband were killed.
The Governor said via X: “I’ve activated the State Emergency Operations Center.
“Local law enforcement in Champlin and Brooklyn Park have the full resources of the State of Minnesota behind them.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and will share more information soon.”
Also a Democrat, State Senator John Hoffman, and his wife were targeted in their home as well in a another shooting. They were shot multiple times and are out of surgery, Walz said at a news conference, adding he was “cautiously optimistic” they would survive.
A search has been launched for a suspect who was impersonating a police officer.
Mark Bruley, Brooklyn Park Police Chief, said a suspect was using a police “badge and uniform” to steer his way into the homes of the lawmakers’, and was even driving a car that looks like a “police vehicle” and was equipped with emergency lights.
