Lagos Blue Line Rail: Governor Sanwo-Olu unveils three new train sets

Executive Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, announced, he has unveiled three new train sets for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line at the National Theatre Station on Sunday 8 June, 2025.

The announcement is coming after the Governor received delivery of the three train set in Friday 6 June, 2025.

Sanwo-Olu said, each of the sets has four cars, adding, with this addition, the State is doubling its current passenger capacity on the Blue Line.

He said, this will “directly improve the commute for thousands of Lagosians”, and that, it will lessen “wait time”, while “speeding up journeys”, as well as, making the system more dependable overall.

He said, the goal of this enhancement is to have trains “arriving every 10 minutes”.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said: “Today, I unveiled three new train sets for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line at the National Theatre Station.

“Each set includes four cars, and with this addition, we are doubling our current passenger capacity on the Blue Line. This will directly improve the commute for thousands of Lagosians, reducing wait times, speeding up journeys, and making the system more reliable overall. Our goal is to have trains arriving every 10 minutes.”

Sanwo-Olu expressed “deep gratitude” to President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for their “strong support” in the areas of procurement and delivery.

The Governor disclosed, before the end of 2025, Lagos State will receive new trains for the Red Line, which he said, will wield two times the capacity of the Blue Line.

He further disclosed, the construction on Phase 2 of the Blue Line – from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko – is ongoing.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said: “I’m deeply grateful to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for their strong support. From procurement to delivery, their backing made this possible.

“Before the end of the year, we’ll receive new trains for the Red Line which will have twice the capacity of the Blue Line trains. Construction on Phase 2 of the Blue Line (Mile 2 to Okokomaiko) is also progressing.”

Sanwo-Olu said, the main goal for all of these is for a “better future for urban mobility in Lagos”, adding, this is just the beginning.

The Governor said: “We’re building infrastructure and a better future for urban mobility in Lagos. And we’re just getting started.”
