‘Important step towards de-escalation’ – UN Sec-Gen Guterres welcomes peace agreement signed by DR Congo and Rwanda

Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, has welcomed the peace agreement signed by the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Rwanda.

The UN Chief said, the move is a crucial step towards “de-escalation and peace” in eastern DRC & the Great Lakes region.

Guterres also praised the United States (US) for its leadership in ensuring the signing of the peace agreement.

The peace agreement was signed at the White House after President of the United States (US), Donald Trump, met with the Foreign Ministers of DR Congo and Rwanda at the Oval Office.

The peace deal puts to an end a “30-year conflict.”

UN Sec-Gen, Guterres, posted on X: “I welcome the peace agreement signed by the Democratic Republic of the Congo & the Republic of Rwanda —an important step toward de-escalation, peace & stability in eastern DRC & the Great Lakes region.

“I commend the United States for its leadership & all those who helped facilitate this process.

“The UN remains fully committed to supporting the implementation of the agreement.”

Under the terms of the peace deal, Rwandan soldiers in thousands are to withdraw from the DRC within three (3) months.
