Governor of the State of California, Gavin Newsom, has said, President of the United States (US), Donald Trump, is neither a “king” nor “above the law”.
Newsom’s statement is coming after the Court “rightly rejected” the President’s claims that he can order the National Guard Troops to do “whatever he wants” and not have to explain to any court.
President Trump had deployed more than 2,000 National Guard Troops to protect Federal property and personnel following the peaceful protest in the city of Los Angeles which turned violent.
Following Trump’s miliary action on Los Angeles, the Governor said, he would sue the President after writing him to withdraw the troops.
Newsom vowed, he won’t allow “this authoritarian use of military soldiers against citizens go unchecked.”
A US Appeal Court ruled that President Donald Trump can take control of National Guard troops he deployed to Los Angeles, despite complaints from leaders within the City and California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Governor Newsom wrote: “Donald Trump is not a king and not above the law.
“Tonight, the court rightly rejected Trump’s claim that he can do whatever he wants with the National Guard and not have to explain himself to a court.
“We will not let this authoritarian use of military soldiers against citizens go unchecked.”
The US President ordered the deployment of the troops in response to widespread demonstrations against his immigration raids in Los Angeles.
Local officials described it as an unnecessary provocation.
On Thursday, a three-judge panel said Trump was within his rights to deploy the troops into service to “protect federal personnel… [and] property”.
A move the 47th US President called a “big win”.
Judge Charles Breyer, in that earlier ruling, said, Trump “did not” go by the law set by Congress on the deployment of a state’s National Guard.
In his decision, Breyer wrote: “His actions were illegal… He must therefore return control of the California National Guard to the Governor of the State of California forthwith.”
