English midfielder, Jobe Bellingham, found the back of the net for the first time for German club, Borussia Dortmund, as the Bundesliga side came from the back to discomfit South African club, Mamelodi Sundowns, 4-3 in their first win at the FIFA Club World Cup on Saturday 21 June, 2025 at TQL Stadium in Ohio.
It was Bellingham’s first start since completing a £27m transfer from Premier League club, Sunderland, this month, however, the Black and Yellow were outplayed for huge parts of the showdown.
Mamelodi Sundowns went in front in the 11th minute through L. Ribeiro, who possessed the ball, muscled through the defence of Dortmund and nicely finished past Gregor Kobel.
But, Dortmund raced to three through Felix Kalu Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy and Bellingham – all three before the end of the first half – in the 16th, 34th and 45th minutes respectively.
Nmecha levelled for the German side after Sundowns goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, gifted a pass straight to the midfielder, who hit the back of the empty net.
Dortmund grabbed possession 35 yards from goal before German attacking midfielder, Julian Brandt, stood up a cross for Serhou Guirassy to head home his 35th goal of the season.
Dortmund then scored the third after Bellingham controlled the ball with his chest and fired his shot.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ K. Mudau netted into his own net to hand the Black and Yellow the fourth goal in the 60th minute.
The South African side did not give up as they fought back to scored twice to make it 4-3 through I. Rayners and L. Mothiba in the 62nd and 90th minutes respectively.
Bellingham produced a beautiful performance for Dortmund on his first full debut which was really pivotal in the German side’s victory on Saturday, however, Mamelodi Sundowns’ attacking style especially in the first 45 minutes stunned their traveling fans.
Williams, the South African side’s goalkeeper, made up for his annoying mistake with some crucial saves, without which the Black and Yeow would have added more goals.
