Nigeria’s President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has extended his “heartfelt condolences” to his “friend”, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, and the people of the Republic of India, following the “tragic crash” of Air India Flight AI171 near Ahmedabad, western region of India.
The Air India Plane was carrying 242 people, including passengers and crew members before it crashed some minutes after taking off.
More than 200 bodies have been recovered from the site.
President Tinubu said, “at this moment of sorrow and pain, Nigeria stands in solidarity with our friend, Modi”, adding, “Nigeria also deeply sympathises with the families and friends of other victims on board the aircraft”.
The Air India Flight AI171 left Ahmedabad and was London-bound before crashing just few minutes after take off – it carried more than 100 Indians, more than 50 Britons.
In his condolence, posted on his official X account, President Tinubu wrote: “I extend my heartfelt condolences to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Government, and the people of the Republic of India following the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI171 near Ahmedabad.
“The tragedy of Air India reminds us, once again, of the fragility of life and the common bond of humanity that holds us together.
“At this moment of sorrow and pain, Nigeria stands in solidarity with our friend, brother and partner, Narendra Modi @narendramodi, and the people of India. Nigeria also deeply sympathises with the families and friends of other victims on board the aircraft.
“May the Almighty receive the souls of the departed and comfort their families.”
