US-Canada: Both countries to ‘build new economic relationship to address trade pressures’

Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, announced, he had a “good conversation” with the Vice President of the United States (US), JD Vance, where both Leaders discussed about building a “new economic and security relationship” for both neighbour countries which will help address “immediate trade pressures, strengthens our defence cooperation, and secures our shared border”.

Carney and Vance had the discussion in Rome, where they visited for the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV, who succeeds Pope Francis, who passed at the age of eighty-eight (88) on Easter Monday, 21 April, 2025.

The discussion for building a “new relationship” between the two countries started when President Donald Trump invited the Canadian PM to the White House; Trump and Carney agreed to build a “new relationship — based on respect, built on common interests.”

Both countries have earlier had it rough after President Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian goods; a move that forced Canada to retaliate by removing American products from Canadian shelves.

While making his election victory speech, PM Carney urged Canadians to stay “united and strong” against Trump’s 25% tariff on Canada.

Prime Minister Carney said: “I had a good conversation with Vice President JD Vance while in Rome.

“We spoke about building a new economic and security relationship between Canada and the United States — one that addresses immediate trade pressures, strengthens our defence cooperation, and secures our shared border.

“We’re strongest when we work together.”
