Real Madrid: Xabi Alonso unveiled as new manager for the next three years

Real Madrid has officially unveiled Xabi Alonso as new head coach of the club until 2028.

The Spaniard is joining the Spanish La Liga giants from German Bundesliga club, Bayer Leverkusen.

Alonso led Bayer Leverkusen for three seasons with the 2023/24 season being his most successful after clinching three trophies – the League, the cup and the German Super Cup.

Madrid announced Alonso will take over the club on Sunday 25 May, 2025 after Ancelotti guided the Los Blancos for the last time in the La Liga match against Real Sociedad at Santiago Bernabeu with the home side emerging victorious 2-0.

Frenchman, who joined from Ligue 1 side, Paris Saint-Germaine, Kylian Mbappe, netted both goals for Real Madrid.

Xabi Alonso is a legend of Real Madrid and one of the best players in the history of world football. He fielded 236 times for the Los Blancos between 2009 and 2014, clinching six (6) titles within time: the tenth European Cup in Lisbon, 1 European Super Cup, 1 LaLiga title, 2 Copas del Rey and 1 Spanish Super Cup, and now, he is making a return to the club, who finished second on the La Liga table, four (4) points behind Champions, Barcelona.

The Spanish manager was officially unveiled on Monday 26 May, 2025.

In his message to Real Madrid lovers, Alonso said, as posted on the club’s X account (@realmadriden): “Hello, Madridistas, I’m already here! I’m so happy to begin this new era: one that starts with excitement and energy. Greetings, and Hala Madrid!”
