Chelsea boosted their hopes for a spot in next season’s Uefa Champions League with a lone goal victory over struggling Manchester United in the Premier League match at Stamford Bridge on Friday 16 May, 2025, thanks to Marc Cucurella’s header.
The pressure was on for the Blues after Aston Villa defeated Tottenham, a result which would have pushed the Villans above Enzo Maresca’s side had they dropped points, however, after a tense wait for the breakthrough, captain Reece James set up Cucurella with a fine turn and cross.
Although Ruben Amorim fielded a strong line-up ahead of the Uefa Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur, the Reds were unable to grab a point at least from the top flight encounter; defender Harry Maguire’s 16th minute goal was struck out by VAR.
In the 71st minute, Cucurella converted James’ assist to help Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea clinch all three (3) points and move closer to the Uefa Champions League 2025/26.
Manchester United have now lost eighteen (18) games in the league this campaign and are yet to amass 40 points.
With this outcome, Chelsea are 4th with 66 points, while Manchester United are 16th with 39 points.
On the other side, Aston Villa defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0.
