Ruben Amorim has pleaded with Manchester United supporters to “stick together” after tendering an on-field apology for the club’s disappointing 2024/25 season, promising that “good days are coming”.
The Portuguese manager addressed the supporters right inside Old Trafford following Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday 25 May, 2025.
The Sunday outcome means Manchester United finished their Premier League 2024/25 campaign on the 15th spot, their poorest league finish since 1973/74 and lowest in the Premier League era.
This is coming after Amorim’s United lost in the final of Uefa Europa League 2024/25 four (4) days earlier to Tottenham Hotspur by a lone goal at Estadio San Mamés, Bilbao, Spain – the home ground of Spanish La Liga club, Athletic Club.
Brennan Johnson netted the only goal for Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs to hand Tottenham Hotspur a spot in next season’s Uefa Champions League.
Amorim told supporters: “First of all, I want to apologise for this season. I know you are really disappointed with me and with the team.
“I want to secondly say thank you. We are very grateful for your support during the season and I know that it’s been really hard. I know it was really hard to support us in many games, but now we have to make a choice or we stay stuck in the past because this season is in the past. It’s over. We fight each other or we stick together and move forward.”
The former Sporting CP boss continued: “Six months ago, in my first three games in charge, with two victories and one draw, I said to you the storm is coming. After this disastrous season, I want to tell you the good days are coming. If there is one club in the world that proves in the past that it can overcome any situation, any disaster, it’s our club, it’s Manchester United Football Club.
“Now I want to say sorry also to my players. Sometimes I was not fair, but I always try to be honest with you. Thanks very much, see you next season.”
Amorim took charge of managerial duties at Manchester United last November, after leaving Portuguese champions Sporting to replace Dutch manager, Erik ten Hag.
Amad and Christian Eriksen netted the two goals for Manchester United in their victory over Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.
