Election Of Pope: Second black smoke billows from Sistine Chapel chimney

Plumes of black smoke were seen swelling from the Sistine Chapel chimney, indicating that the 133 Cardinals have not yet reached a decision to elect a new pope.

The 133 cardinals must arrive at a two-thirds majority to reach a decision. It’s the second black smoke signal of the conclave after three rounds of voting.

During the papal conclave, the cardinals are not allowed to have any form of contact with the outside world. The Cardinal-Electors will vote until they select the next leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.

A new Pope is to be elected after the passing of Pope Francis, who passed at the age of eighty-eight (88) on Easter Monday, 21 April, 2025.

With white smoke billowing from the Apostolic Palace, a new Pope will be announced, after which the new pope will emerge onto the balcony to greet his flock.
