Election Of Pope: ‘May this new pontificate be one of peace and hope’ – President Macron

President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has extended his “message of fraternity” to Pope Leo XIV, and to all Catholics in France and around the world.

The French President said, “on this May 8th, may this new pontificate be one of peace and hope.”

Pope Leo XIV succeeds Pope Francis who passed on Easter Monday, 21 April, 2025 at the age of eighty-eight (88).

This afternoon, White smoke billowed from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican indicating the emergence of a new Pope after 133 Cardinals had cast their votes.

Cardinal Robert Prevost of the United States who will be known as Pope Leo XIV is the first American Pontiff in history.

The new Pope called for peace and paid tribute to the late Pope Francis to a roaring crowd in his first remark from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

President Macron wrote: “A historic moment for the Catholic Church and its millions of faithful. To Pope Leo XIV, and to all Catholics in France and around the world, I extend a message of fraternity.

“On this May 8th, may this new pontificate be one of peace and hope.”
