ECOWAS At 50: President Tinubu, Gowon, Presidents of Togo, Liberia at Bloc golden jubilee in Lagos

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) marked fifty (50) yearsof its existence on Wednesday 28 May, 2025 in Lagos State, Nigeria.

The Bloc’s golden jubilee anniversary was marked with Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu; former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon; President of Liberia, Joseph Nyuma Boakai; President of Togo, Jean-Lucien Savi de Tové; President of the Republic of Guinea Bissau, Umaro Sissoco Emalo; President of the ECOWAS Commission, Umar Alieu Touray; alongside other Leaders in attendance.

The event was flagged off in Accra, Ghana last month. The anniversary which held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos, had President Bola Tinubu highlight the economic milestones achieved by the Bloc.

Former Nigerian Leader, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), is the only surviving Head of State who signed the ECOWAS declaration, present at the event.

ECOWAS was formed on 28 May, 1975 with its Headquarters in Nigeria’s Capital City, Abuja; its current Chairman is President Bola Tinubu.

Following the conclusion of the event, President Tinubu will move to commission some projects in Lagos, including, Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road, among other projects.
