LAMATA Consults Royal Fathers on 57km Purple Line, Assures Further Stakeholder Input
The 57-kilometer Purple Line rail project has received support from traditional rulers along its proposed route, who point to the project’s substantial benefits for community development. Today, the delegation from LAMATA visited HRM (Dr.) Ibrahim Olasunkanmi Lawal-Bello (Olanwa) Olofin V of Isheri Olofin, HRM Oba Hammed Orelope Laka Elegbeda of Egbeda, and HRM Alh. Oba Lasisi Gbadebo Gbadamosi, the Onigando of Igando land. The monarchs enthusiastically welcomed the project and commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for initiating the rail project. The visit is royal sensitisation on the project by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).
The Oba of Igando highlighted the changing infrastructure landscape by sharing a personal story with the community leaders and market men and women at his palace about how a road from the Volkswagen area had affected his ancestral home. Though natural rulers were enthusiastic about the potential of the Purple Line, they urged the government to make sure the project is completed on time once it starts and to give priority to job opportunities for young people in the impacted communities. Dipo Quadri and Architect Dipo Oshobu were part of the LAMATA delegation, which was led by Kolawole Ojelabi, Head of Corporate Communication. The consultant team was led by Engr. Babatunde Osho of Global Impact Environmental Consulting Limited.
The royal sensitisation exercises for the 57-kilometer Purple Line, connecting Volkswagen on the Lagos Badagry Expressway and Redemption City are aimed at creating groundswell support for the rail project. Briefings with host communities and focus groups were used in this engagement to address concerns and get preliminary input. A larger stakeholders’ engagement forum will be held after the project’s detailed design is finalised, LAMATA told the traditional leaders. Incorporating the community into the development process is the goal of this additional engagement.
LAMATA revealed the strong interest shown by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in supporting the Lagos State Government in the implementation of the Purple Line rail project. This partnership signals significant financial backing for the ambitious transportation infrastructure endeavour.
