Edo State Guber: ‘We are closely following Edo State election appeal process’ – US Mission Nigeria

US Mission Nigeria has said, it is “following the Edo election appeal process closely, particularly given civil society’s concerns about critical issues related to the election.”

The Edo State Governorship Election 2024 which held in September 2024 saw Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) defeat Asue Ighodalo of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) to emerge Governor of Edo State.

Tribunal judgment on Wednesday 2 April, 2025 upheld Okpebholo’s election victory, however, via a press statement, the PDP reacted, saying, ‘Tribunal judgment a violation of judicial impartiality – Ighodalo won the poll’.

In its statement, the US Mission Nigeria said:

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria is following the Edo election appeal process closely, particularly given civil society’s concerns about critical issues related to the election, such as ‘serious lapses in the collation process’ that were observed.
Ambassador Mills reiterates his statement of September 24 that transparency and due process are crucial to maintaining public confidence in any democratic system. The United States reaffirms our commitment to supporting free, fair, transparent, and credible elections in Nigeria and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
