Zambia: Drunken policeman free 13 suspects to celebrate New year

In Zambia, a drunken police officer freed thirteen (13) suspects in custody so that they could go and celebrate the new year, officials reveal.

Titus Phiri, Detective Inspector, was arrested after freeing the suspects from the Leonard Cheelo Police Station in Lusaka, the Capital, before he ran away himself.

The 13 suspects were accused of crimes like robbery, assault and burglary.

They are all on the run and a manhunt has been launched to bring them back into custody.

Rae Hamoonga, Police Spox, said, Phiri, “in a state of intoxication, forcibly seized cell keys” from Constable Serah Banda on he Eve of New Year.

He continued, “subsequently, Detective Inspector Phiri unlocked both the male and female cells and instructed the suspects to leave, stating they were freed to cross over into the new year.


“out of the 15 suspects in custody, 13 escaped. Following the incident, the officer fled the scene.”

Phiri is yet to make any comment on the matter.
