Fire incident at the Sokoto Timber Market “took 2 days to overcome”, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) revealed.

The disaster management agency further revealed, “the fire incident which started about 3:15am on Tuesday destroyed about 563 shops of wood, roofing sheet (zinc), nails, toilet fittings and pipes.”

Following its assessment of the fire incident at the Sokoto Timber Market, NEMA disclosed: “After a hard fight against the fire that took 2 days to overcome, the Sokoto State Fire service eventually conquered the fire incident that engulfed building materials section of the market known as Karar Yan katako.


This is the second time in the same month of January this year that the market is suffering from fire incident. The first experience this year occured in the first week of January in the grinding machines section while the second one in the section of wood and other building materials section.


The fire incident which started about 3:15am on Tuesday destroyed about 563 shops of wood, roofing sheet (zinc), nails, toilet fittings and pipes. 


The assessment was carried out by NEMA, SOO, Sokoto SEMA, representives of the market authority and some NGOs. The victims are still counting their losses and pleading for support from government and public spirited individuals.”
