California Wildfires: Costliest blaze in US history with estimate of more than $200bn in losses

The wildfires in Los Angeles, California have killed at least 24 people, displaced thousands and destroyed more than 12,000 structures.

The fires may emerge the most expensive in the history of the United States (US); more than 100,000 people are under evacuation orders.

Dennis Burns, fire behavior analyst, said, Winds picked up on Monday and were expected to strengthen on Tuesday.

The wildfires started last Tuesday, fueled by intense Santa Ana winds; according to Cal Fire, the Palisades, Eaton, Kenneth and Hurst fires have consumed about 62 sq miles (160 sq km).

In the updated total damage estimate:

AccuWeather has updated and increased its preliminary estimate of the total damage and economic loss to between $250 billion and $275 billion due to the fast-moving, wind-fueled fires in Southern California.
