Sebastian Zapeta, on Friday, was indicted on charges of murder and arson, however, he did not appear during the brief court hearing.
33-year old Zapeta is accused of setting the woman ablaze, who may have been sleeping on the train, and fanning the fire with a shirt.
The suspect is being held without bail since his arrest not long after the incident.
The victim is yet to be identified.
Jessica Tisch, New York Police Commissioner, said: “Unbeknownst to the officers who responded, the suspect had stayed on the scene and was seated on a bench on the platform just outside the train car.”
