China: World’s largest hydropower dam to be constructed in Tibet

China has given the approval for the construction of what is expected to be the world’s largest hydropower dam, raising fears about displacement of communities in Tibet.

The move has also ignited worries about impact on environment downstream in India and Bangladesh.

The dam which will be situated in the lower levels of the Yarlung Tsangpo river will have the capacity to generate three times more energy than the Three Gorges Dam, currently the world’s largest hydropower plant.

The development has been described as “a safe project that prioritises ecological protection” by the Chinese State Media.

It said, it will boost prosperity locally and contribute to Beijing’s climate neutrality targets.

China has built several dams in Tibetan areas.
