‘Nigerian Army has no right, duty, or mandate to arrest anyone for any reason’ – Sowore

2023 Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has reacted to the arrest of investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo, by the Nigerian Army.

Sowore said, “the Nigerian Army has no right, duty, or mandate to arrest anyone for any reason, as it is within the purview of the @PoliceNG “

Via its press release titled ‘Nigerian Army clarifies alleged arrest of journalist in Port Harcourt’, the Nigerian Army disclosed, “In a carefully planned operation, troops tracked the suspects to an illegal oil bunkering site. During the operation, multiple arrests were made, including that of Mr Fisayo Soyombo, who was found at the scene.


The suspects, including Mr Soyombo, are currently undergoing preliminary investigations to determine their level of involvement in the illegal activities.”

According to Sowore: “I welcome the 

@HQNigerianArmy’s release of investigative journalist @fisayosoyombo; let’s reiterate that the @HQNigerianArmy has no right, duty, or mandate to arrest anyone for any reason, as it is within the purview of the @PoliceNG. Whether closing down civilian commercial spaces like Banex Plaza in Abuja or helping landlords eject tenants, the @HQNigerianArmy must remain professional in its calling and never engage in illegal activities.”
