2023 Gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has reacted to “a very disturbing video” he watched and said, “no rational person should contemplate a repeat of 1967, and i strongly condemn such inciting and divisive rhetoric that only pulls us apart”.

He said, “We will remain trapped in an endless cycle of bad governance and poverty if we allow those who oppress the masses to get away with sowing the seeds of hate and discord to divide us”, adding, “Let’s treat ourselves with a lot more compassion and ignore those voices that strive to tear us apart”.
According to Rhodes-Vivour: “I’ve just watched a very disturbing video, which i chose not to quote, so i do not amplify the dangerous message. No rational person should contemplate a repeat of 1967, and i strongly condemn such inciting and divisive rhetoric that only pulls us apart.
Isn’t it also convenient that when it appears that Nigerians are standing together to demand better governance from their leaders, such rhetorics – which i strongly believe are sponsored – are suddenly springing up to attempt to divide and distract us.
We will remain trapped in an endless cycle of bad governance and poverty if we allow those who oppress the masses to get away with sowing the seeds of hate and discord to divide us and prevent us from holding the government accountable.
The sudden rise of identity politics is a deliberate attempt by politicians who are bereft of ideas to hold onto power by making elections and governance a battle for ethnic supremacy. It is not.
There are no special markets or subsidies for certain tribes, and neither does any ethnic group borrow at lower interest rates from others. When you present your passport at immigration, there are no shades of green. Don’t be fooled – the enemy is an oppressive political elite that has subjugated the masses and presided over widespread poverty and insecurity.
Let’s treat ourselves with a lot more compassion, tolerance, and dignity. Let’s ignore those voices that strive to tear us apart. We are in this together .
