The European Commission made the statement on World Population Day 2024, today, Thursday 11 July, 2024.
World Population Day is an annual event which is observed on July 11 yearly with the mission to raise awareness of global population issues.
The event was instituted by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989.
According to the European Commission:
On World Population Day, we reaffirm our commitment to keep EU countries competitive by managing its demographic change.
For this purpose, we created a set of policy tools to empower and support EU countries in addressing these challenges. These tools seek to:
→ Balance family and work life
→ Support younger generations
→ Empower older generations and sustaining their welfare
→ Address labour shortages
