He went ahead to plead with Nigerians to “work on our behaviours as a people, and especially our ethics, when we take advantage of the privilege of visiting Dubai and other city states in the UAE.”

In his Letter to Nigerians, Reno Omokri wrote:

Dear Citizens of Nigeria,

The Federal Government has resolved the embargoing of the Nigerian passport by the Government of the United Arab Emirates. You and I know what led to the delisting. Please let us work on our behaviours as a people, and especially our ethics, when we take advantage of the privilege of visiting Dubai and other city states in the UAE.

Respect the host country. You are not citizens. We are guests. We did not develop the country. We went there and met it developed. Let us go there and respect their laws and not make claims that may outrage the local population.

We should not insist on rights that we do not have. Let us also curb some of the tendencies that a few of us have to make money, whatever the costs.

Do not be the one that spoils it for the rest of us. Go there and be on your best behaviour. Respect yourself. The lifting of the embargo was possible because of an act of good governance by our government. But its subsistence solely depends on acts of good citizenship by all Nigerians.

Finally, do note that there is capital punishment in the UAE. Especially for some offences that are prevalent amongst particular sections of our country. Please think twice before engaging in such acts because you may be terminated, and our government may be unable to stop their legal processes. Your actions could shut the door on the rest of us, as has happened in multiple countries, including Seychelles and other nations.

May God bless you and your families, and may God bless Nigeria!
