2023 Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has described Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, as a “very respected Nigerian” for conducting a “free and fair elections and ensured a peaceful transition to democratic rule in Nigeria in 1999”.

The former Governor of Anambra State made the statement on the occasion of the former leader’s 82nd birthday on Thursday 13 June, 2024.
Abdulsalami Abubakar was born on 13 June, 1942 in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria.
According to Obi: “Again today, I am sincerely pleased to celebrate a very respected Nigerian and Former Head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, on the occasion of his 82nd birthday.
“Earlier today, I celebrated Former President Goodluck Jonathan, for his great sacrifice for the nation by conducting a free and fair election and accepting the result that was even against him, for the peace and future of the nation.
“In the same vein, I must celebrate this great Nigerian who also conducted free and fair elections and ensured a peaceful transition to democratic rule in Nigeria in 1999. To date, this great General, through his various campaigns for peace and unity of the nation,
“still contribute to the progress and development of the nation. May God grant him more healthy and fruitful years, and give him the energy to continue to advance the cause of peace and unity of the nation. God Almighty bless him always.”
