FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023: Switzerland 1-5 Spain – La Roja reach last eight

Switzerland fell 1-5 to Spain in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 knockouts on Saturday 5 August, 2023 in Auckland, New Zealand.

La Roja, who had lost 0-4 to Japan in their final group match in Wellington, bounced back with a beautiful performance to net four times in the first 45 minutes.

Aitana Bonmati scored twice in the 5th and 36th minutes, Alba Redondo and Codina scored in the 17th and 45th minutes respectively for La Roja.

Jennifer Hermoso made it five for Spain in the 70th minute.

Switzerland’s consolation came via own goal through Codina in the 11th minute.

Spain emerge the first team to reach the quarter finals of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, and will lock horns against the winner between Netherlands and South Africa in Wellington, next Friday.

Netherlands and South Africa will fight for a spot in the last eight of the tournament on Sunday 6 August, 2023.
