The encounter which was hosted by Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena saw Thomas Tuchel’s side lose despite taking the lead.
The visitors came from behind to clinch a 2-1 victory to reach the semi finals of the tournament.
It was former Chelsea boss, Tuchel’s second match as newly appointed manager of Bayern Munich which didn’t go well with the German.
Tuchel described the outcome as “a huge disappointment”.
According to fcbayern.com, here are post-match reactions from both sides:
Reaction to the Freiburg loss
- Thomas Tuchel: “Obviously it’s a huge disappointment. I don’t know if it’s deserved, but that doesn’t matter at the end of the day. There were phases in the game where we were good or even very good, but perhaps we lacked that cutting edge in front of goal. We have to digest it and learn our lessons.”
- Thomas Müller: “It’s tough to take. We’re out and there’s no going back. We know our cup hopes are over for another year and that hurts because we set out to achieve more. We didn’t play badly and hardly gave Freiburg a sniff, but the finishing, that final ball – we just lacked precision at the decisive moments. It’s not easy against them.”
- Matthijs de Ligt: “I don’t think we were good enough today. Sometimes it felt like we didn’t want to take our chances or win the challenges. We had chances. It’s a shame, but we have to look forward now.”
Reaction from the Freiburg camp
- Christian Streich (Freiburg head coach): “I’m obviously delighted we won. We needed a bit of luck. We played with passion and defended well. Our positional play was very good. One goal decided it in the second half. In the end, you just need luck to win here.”
- Nicolas Höfler (Freiburg): “It’s extremely difficult to win in Munich. We all saw that with Dortmund a few days ago. We worked really hard, Bayern had a lot of possession. We had to do a lot of running. You could see how much we wanted it and believed. It’s just brilliant to score a last-gasp winner from the penalty spot.”
- Lucas Höler (Freiburg): “I don’t think it’s quite sunk in. We played well from the start, our tactics were spot on. After the equaliser, it was largely about defending. We did that well and, in the end, got a bit lucky.”
