The Lekki Deep Sea Port at Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos State, Nigeria, was commissioned by President Muhammadu Buhari and the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday 23 January, 2023.

According to the Lagos State Government, “the Lekki Deep Sea Port is a joint venture enterprise owned by a group of investors led by the Lekki Port Investment Holdings Inc., the Lagos State Government and the Federal Government.
“The Sea Port is located approximately 65km to the East of Lagos City and spreading over 90 hectares of land bordered on the South by the Atlantic Ocean.
“It is the biggest in Nigeria, and one of the biggest in sub-saharan Africa.”
The Lekki Deep Sea Port is expected to “provide jobs and boost economic development in Lagos”, the State government said.
This “magnificent infrastructure” as described by the Lagos State Government, is to be expanded to wield the capacity to handle 6 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) containers and a huge number of liquid as well as dry bulk uncontainerized cargoes.
Developed in phases, and financed by private investors and a consortium of Banks
Features:
- Three Terminals: Container, Liquid and Dry Bulk Terminals. Container Terminal – possesses an initial draft of 14 meters, with the potential for further dredging to 16.5 metres. Capable of handling 2.5 million 20″ standard containers per year. Liquid Terminal – Three liquid berths. Expected to handle vessels up to 45,000 DWT (dead weight tonnage) and can expand to reach a capacity of 160,000 DWT. Dry Bulk Terminal – Situated on the west side of the container terminal. Its 300m available quay length has the capacity to accommodate a Panamax class vessel[22] (75,000 DWT).
- Rail Connection: An announcement was made by the Lekki Port Enterprises, which says, it will fund an 800 million USD railway line from the harbour to Ijebu-Ode, a town in Ogun State, and from there, it will connect to the proposed Lagos-Benin City- Calabar Railway Line.
