La Liga: Barcelona 1-1 Espanyol – Catalans held at Camp Nou

Barcelona were given a tough encounter by local rivals Espanyol in the Spanish La Liga match at the Nou Camp on Saturday 31 December, 2022.

It ended 1-1 in the new year’s eve derby. Marcos Alonso handed Barcelona the lead early, in the 7th minute, but former Stoke City and Newcastle United striker, Joselu, levelled for Espanyol from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute.

Jordi Alba, Catalans full-back was a shown a second yellow card in the last minutes, while for the visitors, Vinicius Souza was sent off.

Despite finishing 1-1, Barcelona climbed back to the top spot of the table on goal difference ahead of Real Madrid, who defeated Real Valladolid 2-0 earlier, on Friday.
