Kyiv hit by explosions amid new year threats from Russia

Less than 60 minutes to the new year, 2023, a new round of explosions have rocked the Ukraine capital, Kyiv, after Russia had attacked Ukraine with missiles targeting the capital as well as other cities.

According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the first explosion of the new year started roughly 30 minutes after midnight.

Mayor Klitschko continued, there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Ukrainians will fight until they emerge victorious, President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said earlier in the evening.

In his address, Zelensky said, as his country suffers new waves of strikes as 2022 ends: “We fight and will continue to fight. For the sake of the main word: ‘victory’.


“I want to say to all of you: Ukrainians, you are incredible! See what we have done and what we are doing!


“We fight as one team — the whole country, all our regions. I admire you all. I want to thank every invincible region of Ukraine,”

According to AFP journalists, explosions hit Kyiv – at least 11 loud blasts were heard in the afternoon.

Mayor Klitschko revealed, one person died as a result of the attacks on Saturday.

City authorities said, 22 people sustained various degrees of injuries.

One explosion burst open a corner of a four-star Hotel Alfavito in Kyiv, spilling rubble into the street.

23-year old Yaroslav Mutenko, a filmmaker, told AFP, “our enemies the Russians can destroy our calm but they cannot destroy our spirit.


“Why do I go celebrate with friends? Because this year I understand that it is important to have people near.”
