The US President, Joe Biden, is expected to make the announcement of the move this week, according to officials who are unnamed.

Ukraine has not stopped requesting for more air defence support for some time, as attacks from Russia have continued to cause major blackouts as well as affected civilians badly.

One of the most advanced US air defence systems is Patriot, however, supplies are likely to be limited to Ukraine.

How many of its batteries will be sent to Ukraine is still not known.

Once approval is given on the move, the system will probably be sent over in the coming days, with soldiers of Ukraine trained to use them at a US Army Base in Grafenwoehr, Germany, the officials said.

According to the Kremlin, on Wednesday, the Patriot system will be a legitimate target for strikes from Russia.
