Gareth Southgate, head coach of England, confirmed the incident after the Three Lions’ easy win over African side, Senegal, in the last-16 match of the FIFA World Cup 2022.

England made light work of the Lions of Teranga, cruising past them by three goals to nothing at the Al Bayt Stadium in Qatar.

Three Lions head coach, Southgate, said: “Sometimes football isn’t the most important thing and family should come first.”

A spokesperson for Sterling said, the player was “shaken” by the news, also “as soon as he was alerted he wanted to get home, concerned for the well-being of his children”.

Southgate further said: “We wanted to give him that space and we will see over the next few days how that develops.”
