Coach Martino has parted ways with the Mexico National team following the country’s inability to qualify for the last-16 stage of the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, despite winning their final preliminary encounter against Saudi Arabia by two goals to one.

60-year old Martino, took charge of the Mexico National team in 2019, a displeasing World Cup campaign saw them fall to Argentina following a draw with Poland, leaving the El Tri with very tiny hope of scaling through the group stages.

After Mexico’s encounter against Saudi Arabia, coach Martino, in his post-match comments, said: “My contract ended when the referee blew the whistle to end the match and there is nothing more to it.

“Ever since I arrived here I have worked with complete freedom, with no interference from anyone. I appreciate that from the President and the Sporting Directors.

“I am the one responsible for the disappointment we feel.

“We accept the failure we have had at the World Cup.

“Against Poland we were unable to show the superiority we had against Argentina, we could have faced the second half in our normal style. Tonight, Mexico’s superiority was clear to see.”
