The win over France was Argentina’s third World Cup triumph.
The Sky Blue and Whites emerged winners in a penalty shootout by four goals to two following a spectacular encounter which ended 3-3.
Les Bleus ended up on the losing corner despite forward Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick, which is the first in a FIFA World Cup final since 1966.
Argentina looked like they were cruising into victory when Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria placed the Sky Blue and Whites ahead by two goals, only for a stunning comeback from Kylian Mbappe to turn the clash around with two goals in just two minutes late on.
Messi opened scoring in the 23rd minute from the penalty spot for the South Americans, and Di Maria extended the lead in the 36th minute, then, Mbappe pulled one back for defending champions, France, in the 80th minute and levelled in the 81st minute.
In extra time, precisely in the 108th minute, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward, Messi, brought Argentina back to the front, but, ten minutes later, Mbappe completed his hat-trick for the Les Bleus to bring the encounter level 3-3.
The game went into penalties and Argentina emerged champions, winning the shootout 4-2.
At last, Lionel Messi is a FIFA World Cup winner. The forward went on his knees in celebration and was joined by his Argentina teammates.
