Calabar Carnival 2022: Tragedy at event ‘ugly and huge loss’ – Labour Party Presidential candidate Peter Obi ‘sincerely commiserate with families’

The Calabar Carnival 2022 which was supposed to be an event to showcase and celebrate culture from different parts of Nigeria turned tragic after a car rammed into the crowd, killing seven and several others sustaining various degrees of injury.

The Governor of Cross River State, Ben Ayade, and other dignitaries were present when the “unfortunate incident” happened.

Ayade assured the driver of the car will be made to face the law.

Labour Party (LP) 2023 Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in his condolence message to the “families and people of Cross River State”, termed the incident at the Carnival as “unfortunate”.

He said, “I am saddened by the loss of lives”, calling it a “huge loss”. Also, went ahead to “pray for quick recovery” of those with injuries.

Obi wrote: “The unfortunate incident at the annual Calabar Carnival is a huge loss to the immediate and extended families of the victims, the government and people of Cross River State and Nigerians in general. I am saddened by the loss of lives, many injuries recorded.


“I sincerely commiserate with the families who lost their loved ones in this ugly incident, and pray for the quick recovery of the injured. May God grant eternal rest to the dead.”
