Control of the Senate now depends on the results of three states, which are: Nevada, Georgia and Arizona – where a run-off election will be conducted on 3 December.

Republicans are drawing close to a 218-seater majority in the House, however, the planned number of seats is no longer as bright as expected.

Officials have severally described delays experienced in announcing the final results as normal.

They further buttressed that, this is an expected part of the US elections as a result of thin margins that exist between candidates, potentially contested elections and possible recounts.

Also, states have different rules for how and when mail-in ballots are counted.

According to BBC, as of Friday morning:

The House Of Representatives

The Republicans have so far secured 213 seats, compared to 206 for the Democrats. A total of 218 seats are needed to gain a majority in the legislative body, which has 435 members.

The Senate

Control of the Senate remains a toss-up, with the Democrats having secured 48 seats to the Republicans’ 49. Three races – Arizona, Nevada and Georgia – have yet to be called.

In Arizona, hundreds of thousands of ballots remained uncounted as of Friday morning, including an estimated 400,000 in Maricopa County and approximately 159,000 in Pima County, where officials have said that a final count is unlikely until early next week.

Votes are still also being tabulated in Nevada, where thousands of ballots – nearly 60,000 – still needed to be processed.

US President Joe Biden has said the election was a “good day” for US democracy.
