Argentina 1-2 Saudi Arabia: One of the biggest shocks in the history of FIFA World Cup |
Photos 👇 The South American country which is regarded as the favourites to win the tournament, scored the first goal of the match when Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward, Lionel Messi, found the back of the net from the penalty spot after Leandro Paredes had been fouled on.
Messi’s goal looked like it had set Argentina on their way to an easy triumph over their Asian opponent and extend their 38-game unbeaten run.
Lionel Scaloni’s side, however, were denied by the offside flag thrice as they hustled to beat the Saudi Arabian offside trap.
After the break, Saudi Arabia struck twice in five minutes as Argentina looked helpless. First, Saleh Alshehri fired a low left-footed effort into the far corner and Saleh Aldawsari sealed victory for the Asians with a beautiful second.
Saudi Arabia went ahead to hold firm to secure their victory and produce the first jaw-dropping upset of the FIFA World Cup 2022 and “one of the biggest shocks in FIFA World Cup history”.
On the other side of the Group, Mexico and Poland finished goalless.
