Favorite Afrobeats Artists is the name of the new category, and the first set of nominees for the award ceremony for this year (2022) includes:
- Burna boy
- CKay
- Tems
- Fireboy DML
- Wizkid
Singers from Nigeria, Wizkid and Tems, lead Africa into the AMAs after clinching nominations in three other categories.
“Essence”, which is Wizkid’s hit single, featuring Tems has bagged nomination for Favorite R&B Song. Future’s hit single “Wait For U”, featuring Drake and Tems is nominated for Collaboration Of The Year as well as Favorite Hip-Hop Song.
This update is coming after the recording academy announced they are planning to create an Afrobeats category for the Grammys.
It is now very obvious that Afrobeats has evolved into being a world phenomenon as artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido alongside many others have pushed the genre beyond the African continent, making it one of the leading music genres in the world currently.
The AMAs is one of the biggest fans voted awards event that rewards great achievements made by artists that are most popular across the globe.
The 50th annual American Music Awards (AMA) will take place on Sunday 20 November, 2022 at the Microsoft Theatre in the city of Los Angeles, California.
