Almost 200,000 people have been unable to use tap water for some days now in the state capital after a water treatment center was disabled by flooding .
According to officials, works are currently ongoing to ensure the restoration of the supply of water, however, locals opened up and complained that relief is needed desperately as a result of the terrible heat.
Both Mississippi National Guard troops – who have distributed more than one million bottles of water within 24 hours – as well as a group of local volunteers, have joined hands to ensure that water gets to people who have been unable to drink tap water, bathe or flush toilets.
Shirley Barnes, bared her mind to BBC as she queued to get more bottles of water, she said: “It’s been awful going without water. It’s been a horrific experience.
“Trying to do your normal routines, that’s been the hardest. Trying to boil water. Washing your face, taking your bath, cooking. It’s like you living back in the caveman days.
“I never thought I would be in this predicament, but here we are.”
